Ajax enabled MailScanner web frontend

Baruwa (swahili for letter or mail) is a web 2.0 MailScanner front-end. It provides an easy to use interface for managing a MailScanner installation. It is used to perform operations such as releasing quarantined messages, spam learning, whitelisting and blacklisting addresses, monitoring the health of the services etc.

Baruwa is implemented using web 2.0 features (AJAX) where deemed fit, graphing is also implemented on the client side using SVG, Silverlight or VML. Baruwa has full support for i18n, letting you support any language of your choosing.

It includes reporting functionality with an easy to use query builder, results can be displayed as message lists or graphed as colorful and pretty interactive graphs.

Custom MailScanner modules are provided to allow for logging of messages to the mysql database with SQLite as backup, managing whitelists and blacklists and managing per user spam check settings.

Baruwa is open source software, written in Python/Perl using the Django Framework and MySQL for storage, it is released under the GPLv2 and is available for free download.

The word Baruwa literally means a mail or a letter in the Swahili language. It is a user-friendly bridge or interface to install a MailScanner on your PC. Several computer operations are facilitated by it, particularly for studying problems related to statistics and the Bayes’ theorem and also enabling the blacklisting of sites suspected of being spammers or to white list a site which is authentic and genuine submitting only secured data free from any adware or viruses. Baruwa can also help in the release of messages which have been put under quarantine and simultaneously scrutinize the system’s health. It uses Web 2.0 characteristics whenever and wherever it seems appropriate to implement. On the gamut of the client, it enables graphics with the use of VML or SVG and provides a comprehensive support for i18n including the language you may prefer or select.

It has an in-built query formulator with which various reports can be generated and the same can be projected either in the form of lists or attractive graphs and diagrams in different colors. There are customized modules in the MailScanner program which allow text data to be logged into the dBase data with a backup provided by SQLite. This also allows for the various sites to be categorized and secured as per their authenticity and genuineness. Even checks for spam messaging are facilitated by Baruwa.

It is a freeware which is open source and can be downloaded free of charge. The framework of Django is used along with the Perl/Python language and the release is courtesy of GPLv2. It boasts support from Ajax for its smooth and comprehensive operations including report generation. Another formidable feature is the fast and accurate interactive reports and graphs in SVG and PDF formats respectively. The back-up generated by SQLite prevents the loss of data if MySQL is not operational for any reason.

It also provides the facility of integration for domains by MTA and even transportation of the configuration. It does not prevent multiple users to work with different usernames. Not only does Baruwa segregate the blacklisted sites or messages from the white listed ones, it also identifies and recognizes the IP addresses associated with them. Though Java script is required for formation of graphs, it can perform other operations without the Java script.

Regular house maintenance and cleaning functions like maintenance of database and management of quarantine are provided by Baruwa with its manage.py and manage. py cleanquarantine which are Django customized commands. In addition, it provides commands to help delete files which are under quarantine for a certain period of time and also generates reports for the same. It provides for the generation of an e-mail listing all the messages sent to quarantine within the last twenty-four hours and this report is also focused per user who has enabled this provision on his PC. There is a provision for a command which will automatically send all messages to the archives of your mail box which are older than two months, thus helping you to properly maintain your mailbox and also the database.
