There are some really big-wig and serious utilities for Windows, and there are some useful extras that you can make use of to facilitate your computer usage. DeskBot falls somewhere in the middle. What it doesn't add in the way of functionality, it makes up in its thoughtful factor. Bellcraft Technologies, who developed this free software, proclaim DeskBot to be a text-to-speech which will read any text copied to the clipboard either automatically or when you double click the on-screen character (which defaults to a genie). DeskBot will also announce the time at predetermined intervals defaulting to every half hour.

The ability to have a Word document or Excel spreadsheet read to you while you are working on something else may have its merits. If you have an eBook in Word format, you could be listening to that while you work. The on-screen characters are created using the Microsoft Agent Animated, Talking Characters technology and are reminiscent of the Microsoft Word Paperclip known as Clippit. The text-to-speech capability is provided by the Lernout & Hauspie Text-to-Speech Engine.

Only two characters are supplied with the full DeskBot installation but more can be downloaded. Similarly, additional voices and languages can also be downloaded if you find the standard ones not to your liking. The hyperlinks to the download websites can be found on the DeskBot Options Download tab. Installation is very simple and can be completed in a matter of minutes.

In addition, DeskBot can be customized to your personal preferences such as starting with Windows, frequency of the current time announcement, and a selection of user-defined random start-up greetings.

Though DeskBot may not provide any life changing additional functionality to your Windows experience, it certainly can ease the tedium of long hours sat at the computer.
