Editor's review for Directory Opus
Since the DOS days, software companies have been creating file managers to make up for the shortcomings of the operating system. Now in the days of Windows 7, there is surprisingly still a need for these file manager replacements. Even with all the new features in Windows Vista and Windows 7, Explorer’s file management capabilities are still mediocre at best. That’s where Directory Opus comes in. It has been around since 1994, and you can tell that GP Software has used their 16 years of expertise to create a file manager that puts the power back in the hands of the user.
Over the years, competitors like Norton Commander have come and gone, but Directory Opus has consistently innovated as new Windows versions have been released. Thus we arrive at Directory Opus 9.5, which is fully compatible with the 64 bit Windows 7 and takes advantage of its capabilities.
Let’s start with the basics. As you open opus, you’ll notice right away that you’re looking at two directory listings side by side. This is traditionally how file managers have worked in the past, allowing you to easily copy or move files between directories without opening and closing windows.
However, if you don’t like the dual lister format, you can switch to a single list with a click of the mouse. The two lists can be split either vertically or horizontally, also controlled by a single mouse click. This exemplifies the interface of Directory Opus. You can do just about everything in more than one way; there’s no right or wrong way to do something. It comes down to your preference and how you work the best.
Directory Opus offers highly customized toolbars on which you can place anything from commands to locations. For instance, if you have several folders beneath your documents or pictures folder that you switch to frequently, you can add all of these to the toolbar for immediate access. Do you have a thumb drive you frequently use? Just add it to the toolbar. This greatly simplifies managing several folders simultaneously.
The viewing pane is another indispensible tool. Rather than a separate application, Directory Opus uses a window within the file manager itself to view the content of a given file. The viewer works with just about every file type under the sun, including some that may surprise you such as Photoshop and Paintshop Pro files. In addition, you can view web pages, office documents, flash animations and videos. If you wish, you can also view files in full-screen mode or as a slideshow. And it’s not just a viewer. You can use it to rotate images, adjust their brightness and print them.
If you find tabbed browsing to be productive in your web browser, you’ll be glad to know that Directory Opus brings tabs to your file manager. It’s a snap to create multiple tabs, switch between them, close all but the active tab and more. You can even right-click on a tab to be presented with a context-sensitive menu for that folder.
Customization is the name of the game with Directory Opus. You can add a toolbar button that performs any of over 150 built-in commands, or you can use the Opus script language to create your own. Layouts can be saved for future use and folder display styles can be changed on the fly.
In short, although this review described some important areas of functionality within Directory Opus, it barely scratched the surface. This is an extremely powerful yet affordable file manager that can assist in your daily tasks in ways big and small. And to top it all off, you can download a free, 60-day trial, which is practically unheard of. However, once you download Directory Opus and begin using it, you’ll understand why GP Software was so confident in their flagship application, and you’ll be putting it to work for you in no time.

A good filemanager, but the price is outrageous. This software is not worth 90 USD or 65 Euro.
Try 20 or 30 USD and you might have a winner.
