Spell checking add-in for Internet Explorer
|
ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application.
The program installs as a new button in the IE toolbar (as well as a new menu item under "Tools") - after filling in a form, just hit the ieSpell button and it pops up a dialog, similar to the MS Word spell check. ieSpell also works (right-click menu only) on other IE based browsers such as SlimBrowser, CrazyBrowser, MSN, MyIE, etc.

If you frequently use your browser to write content, whether it’s an email, blog entry or even a Facebook update, ieSpell lets you quickly spell check your entry, getting rid of annoying spelling mistakes for good and making you look a whole lot more professional to prospective clients, colleagues and friends.
ieSpell is an extension for Internet Explorer that adds spell checking functionality to the browser. Its use is very straightforward. You simply click the ieSpell item under the tools menu to either check the current edit field or set ieSpell options. In addition, you can right-click anywhere in an edit field and select the ieSpell menu item to begin spell checking immediately. Once you do, up pops a dialog that you could mistake for the Office spell checker, with the same options you’ve come to expect. Although the Office spell checker or any other third-party software is not required to use ieSpell, it will use the same custom dictionary as your Office spell checker if you wish. This means that when you add a word to your ieSpell dictionary, it will also be added to the exceptions for the Office spell checker.
Should you come across an unfamiliar word in your travels through the web, ieSpell offers the bonus of an online lookup tool that lets you search a dictionary as well as Wikipedia for a given word. This can be helpful during research projects or when curiosity simply gets the better of you.
As far as performance, ieSpell blows server-side spell checkers out of the water. Once you use it, you’ll never use the spell checker in Wordpress or any other online application again. Plus, ieSpell applies your custom dictionary to all fields it checks, whereas using a spell checker on each site means you have to maintain multiple custom dictionaries. The spell checker is intuitive when it comes to providing spelling suggestions, in some cases doing a better job than the Office spell checker. It uses typographic “looks like” matching to achieve this level of success.
For webmasters, ieSpell also includes a powerful API that allows you a multitude of options in providing spell checking services for your users. You can force ieSpell to ignore certain text fields, require users to spell check documents before they can submit it and even cancel the posting of a document if a user cancels the spell check.
The latest version of ieSpell is much faster when checking longer documents of 30,000 characters or more, such as Wikipedia entries. It is compatible with all versions of Internet Explorer greater than 5.0, as well as any browser that uses IE as a base, such as America Online, Neoplanet, MSN and more. If you’re using one of these browsers, only the right-click menu will be available to you.
