Description of Piggydb 5.1
Web notebook application. Create highly structured content
Piggydb is a Web notebook application that provides you with a platform to build your knowledge personally or collaboratively. With Piggydb, you can create highly structured content by connecting knowledge fragments to each other to build a network structure, which is more flexible and expressive than a tree structure. Fragments can also be classified using hierarchical tags.
Piggydb does not aim to be an input-and-search database application.
It aims to be a platform that encourages you to organize your knowledge continuously to discover new ideas or concepts, and moreover enrich your creativity.
Editor's review for Piggydb
Piggydb is a unique web-based application that essentially acts as a notebook where you can enter information either individually or collaboratively. Whether you’re jotting down new ideas for a product or making a grocery list, Piggydb is designed to maximize your creativity and help you connect the dots between your ideas. More flexible than a standard database and easier to use than a Wiki, Piggydb gives users the help they need to create truly comprehensive knowledge listings around a particular topic.
Rather than a tree structure or linked documents, Piggydb uses fragments that can be connected together in any form you desire. It’s more like a relational database than a Wiki or any other Web 2.0 application. The system is perfect for small groups of people who are working on a project or trying to brainstorm ideas. Fragments can be either text or file fragments, with no realistic limit on the number that can be used in one Piggydb.
Tags are another form of organization utilized by Piggydb databases. The entire database can be linked by a hierarchical tagging structure whereby a child tag inherits the properties of its parent tags. These tags aren’t just words as in blogging tags; they’re much more powerful. Each can have a function as well as a value, allowing for even greater control over the relationship between database items.
When it comes to publishing, Piggydb allows you to export the entire database to one file and to restore a database from a single file as well. An XML document can also be generated, which can be displayed in any number of environments or printed for easy review. In the future, Piggydb promises to provide even greater publishing and export flexibility by allowing you to export certain parts of the database based on tags. It will also be able to output documents in customizable formats rather than plain XML.
So why Piggydb over other web 2.0 applications like Delicious or Wikipedia? These systems, while certainly useful, are locked into their format. There’s no easy way to reorganize information in a better way, should you come up with one. Piggydb makes it much easier to look at a chunk of information and organize it from a fresh perspective based on any number of variables and schemes. Your imagination is the limit.
Piggydb is available in three flavors. The personal version is completely self-contained and does not require any kind of web server software. It’s as simple as downloading and installing the software and launching the server. Your default browser will automatically load the Piggydb system. If you’re trying to integrate it with a web server, setup is just as easy. Simply download the package and run the startup file appropriate to your operating system and off you go. There’s no configuration required. Piggydb is also available in a WAR package for those with servlet systems like Tomcat. Setup is a snap here as well.
Overall, Piggydb is an extremely innovative way of organizing information, and its future holds a great deal of promise.
