Description of SourceMonitor 3.1.5

Check and optimize your code
SourceMonitor lets you see inside your software source code to find out how much code you have and to identify the relative complexity of your modules. For example, you can use SourceMonitor to identify the code that is most likely to contain defects and thus warrants formal review. SourceMonitor, written in C++, runs through your code at high speed, typically at least 10,000 lines of code per second.

Key features

• Collects metrics in a fast, single pass through source files.
• Measures metrics for source code written in C++, C, C#, VB.NET, Java, Delphi, Visual Basic (VB6) or HTML.
• Includes method and function level metrics for C++, C, C#, VB.NET, Java, and Delphi.
• Offers Modified Complexity metric option.
• Saves metrics in checkpoints for comparison during software development projects.
• Displays and prints metrics in tables and charts, including Kiviat diagrams.
• Operates within a standard Windows GUI or inside your scripts using XML command files.
• Exports metrics to XML or CSV (comma-separated-value) files for further processing with other tools.

Editor's review for SourceMonitor

As any programmer knows, the ability to scan through countless hundreds or thousands (or even upwards of hundreds of thousands or millions) of lines of code to locate a single error can be a tedious process to conduct day in, day out while trying to perfect the right program for a job. With this in mind, Campwood Software has developed it's formidable tool the SourceMonitor.

Designed to focus entirely on program source code, the freeware program SourceMonitor helps provide invaluable feedback during a code development process in order to help ease the process of program development while speeding up code refining in order to reduce overall time expenditure on products. It does this by looking inside any software's source code itself to find out exactly how much code the software is processing and identify the overall relative complexity of all modules contained within.

What use could looking inside the source code itself and analyzing for relative complexity have for me, you ask? SourceMonitor excels in helping users through its scanning process to identify specific code that is most likely to contain program-disabling defects and highlight it for formal review by either yourself or a dedicated programmer for correction. Written in C++, the SourceMonitor software base runs though all code strings at high-speed intervals and provides a range of information for users to analyze and use in their decision-making processes.

Some of this information includes specific metrics via a fast single pass through files while measuring these metrics a variety of languages including C++, C#, C, Java, VB.Net, Visual Basic (VB6), Delphji and HTML. Further, it allows for method and function level metrics to be included for C++, C#, C, Java, VB.NET and Delphi while at the same time allowing for a modified complexity metric option while displaying metrics in tables, charts and diagrams and allowing for metrics to be quickly and easily exported for further processing with other tools (or simply to be backed-up for future reference).

Again, the best part about all of this software is that it is absolutely free of charge, effective and overall offers a good user experience.
