Editor's review for Vallen JPegger
There are many utilities available that can manage either your images or your music. It is rare to find one that does both, and does it well. Vallen JPegger from Vallen Systeme Gmbh, is one such rare diamond. In its first incarnation Vallen JPegger, as its name suggests, only managed images. However, Harmut Vallen, who founded the company in 1980, listened to the feedback he received and added the ability to manage MP3 files.
JPegger is unusual in that it does not require installation. It can be started from the command line utility with many powerful options or burned to a CD containing images and/or MP3 files and started automatically with the provided AUTORUN.INF and VSTARTER.INI files. Many of the same command line options can be configured in the VSTARTER.INI file along with a customisable background image to control and brand JPegger to your needs.
The setup program asks for the name of the folder you wish to extract its files to. Clicking Next will start the extraction. If you only want to use JPegger from the command line or burn it to CD, click Cancel when you are prompted for which of the 26 supported languages JPegger should use. JPegger will then start automatically. To continue with a more traditional installation select the language, screen layout, image formats to be associated with JPegger and whether you want icons on the Desktop and Start menu. JPegger will then launch, prompt for your image folder and whether you want it to search all subdirectories for images. By default JPegger creates its own thumbnails for all images found and stores them in a hidden file named 'jpeggeri.dat' within the same folder as the images. If you do not want this, click Cancel then disable the option on the Preferences - Thumbnails tab in the File menu.
The Image Explorer screen layout is clear with a folder tree at the top left, file list at the bottom left and two tabs for thumbnails and full image display on the right. Navigation is intuitive using the cursor keys, Page-Up, Page-Down, Home and End. When used on either the thumbnails or full image tabs the currently selected image is kept synchronized on the other tab. Pressing Enter or double clicking on a thumbnail will display the selected image in full screen mode. In full screen mode, navigation follows much the same pattern with the addition of being able to pan around large images.
JPegger handles basic image manipulation such as flipping and rotating. It will also automatically select the correct orientation for images with EXIF information such as digital photographs. You can configure your favourite image editor in the Preferences menu for more advanced manipulation.
The MP3 Music Explorer will automatically search for MP3 files from your chosen folder including any subfolders. The screen layout is similar to the Image Explorer with a tree structure at the top left categorized on the MP3 tags found. A list of all MP3 files in the selected category and their associated tags is shown in the top right pane. You can create a playlist in the bottom right pane which can then be played using the basic music player found at the bottom left.
For an all-in-one image and MP3 manager, JPegger is definitely worth a try!
