Description of IVT VT220 23.1
Multi-session, LAN-oriented Telnet/SSH VT220 emulator
IVT is a multi-session, LAN-oriented (but serial lines supporting) VT220 terminal emulation program. This build is compiled without support for SSH-2.If you use a PC to access remote hosts and you care about fast, accurate VT220 terminal emulation with a large tabbed screen, multi-session, color support, fast copy/paste etc. because you use Unix text-mode applications such as EMACS, VI or Midnight Commander, then IVT is a program designed for you. This free version of IVT VT220 comes without the SSH/Kerberos protection.
Editor's review for IVT VT220
If you talk to most people about VT220 emulation, you are pretty much guaranteed to be met with a blank expression and almost be able to see the huge red question mark appear over their heads. In fact, unless the person is "of a certain age" and from an IT background, it is quite likely that he or she has never seen or touched the infamous DEC VT220 terminal. Most of them are in landfills or gathering dust in a museum. The DEC VT220 terminal was in its heyday in the '80s and '90s when the personal computer was in its infancy and most business systems were running on mainframes or UNIX boxes. No computing power was needed at the desktop so all the user needed was a keyboard, monitor and a connection to the mainframe or UNIX box either by direct cable or modem connection.
Today, VT220 emulation is more common that most people realize. If you've ever been to a travel agent to book a flight or visited your friendly local bank to apply for a loan, then you may have seen the customer service representative click a few times with a mouse then start feverishly hammering away at the keyboard. Whilst most front office applications have a graphical user interface (GUI) such a Microsoft Windows, many back office applications are still running on mainframes and UNIX machines. Why? Because the back end applications focus on what they need to do - crunch numbers or perform searches, etc. on massive databases. Back end applications are not designed to be pretty to look at, they are designed to be fast and efficient and the best way to achieve that is with a simpler text based user interface.
VT220 emulation can also be used for more "modern" activities such as file transfer and performing tasks more suited to the command line. Webmasters and technical support staff will use a VT220 emulator on their computer to establish a secure, encrypted connection to a remote computer to complete tasks that require them to get down and dirty with the operating system. This is where the IVT VT220 Emulator (IVT) shines. Not only does it provide the time honoured serial cable style connection to a remote server, it also provides TelNet, Secure Shell (SSH), Remote Login (RLOGIN) and NetBios (Windows Networking) connectivity.
Unlike the practically obsolete HyperTerminal utility buried in the depths of Microsoft Windows Accessories, IVT provides a modern generation terminal emulation complete with colour support, multi screen capability and a tabbed interface which allows you to make multiple connections to one or more remote servers without cluttering your desktop with multiple terminal screens.
To make your life easier, IVT also allows you to customise the keyboard and set different colour schemes for each tab so you never lose track of which remote server you are working on. You can keep a record of what activities you have done, perhaps for client billing or audit purposes, courtesy of IVT's ability to keep a log of commands entered in each session and save all the detail including screen shots to a real printer or to a file.
The non-secure versions of IVT are free (as in beer) whilst the secure versions require a commercial license – decide what suits you best and experience the speed and efficiency!
Get speed and efficiency in the modern computer world with the IVT VT220 Emulator.
