Kantaris Media Player can play almost anything you can throw at it - AVI, MPEG, MGEG-AVC, WMV, MOV, MKV, quicktime, matroska, divx, xvid, H264, MP3, WMA, OGG files and more. It can also play DVD's and audio CD's. The player also displays some of the most beautiful music visualizations ever seen. All this is completely free.
It is based on code from Videolan client (VLC) and Bass audio library. The graphical user interface is similar to that of Windows Media Player.

For many people, finding an effective, universal media player has long been a struggle. While some like Windows Media Player may have a decent graphical interface and be useful for most formats the inability to handle a multitude of flexible file formats and play some formats without specialized codex updates can be frustrating at best. Coupled with the need for many people to have a file player that is highly portable as well (as not all computers have a decent media player installed on them to begin with and some installations on corporate machines do not allow additional necessary plug-ins to be added for necessary functionality) the choices on the market are quite limited.
While a few years ago, the Videolan Client (VLC) player debuted to much applause in the computer industry thanks to its flexibility and high level or portability; at the same time, it lacked many of the appeals of other more mainstream players - namely it's graphical interface was quite lacking, and some of its controls are somewhat difficult to use for novice users.
With this in mind the Kantaris Media Player was born - bridging the VLC media player's portability and flexibility with the Bass audio library, a smooth and attractive open-source media player was developed that not only caters to many of the needs of media enthusiasts around the world but allows for ease and flexibility of use that is parallel to none.
Aside from the natural ability for the Kantaris Media Player to work on a wide range of file formats, the developers at Kantaris have actively been working to incorporate as many additional features as possible into the media player system. One such feature, for example, is the Kantaris Media Player's unique ability to instantly detect the character set of a selected subtitle tract and adjust the character settings accordingly. While this may not be much of a bonus to many people who simply use standard English subtitles it is a major benefit to those who use alternative subtitle tracts, especially those from pictographic languages such as Chinese or Japanese.
