Description of Snippet Manager 2010
Archive and search code snippets in any language
Snippet Manager is an extremely lightweight (no setup required) freeware utility that you can use for managing your code snippets in a variety of languages. Snippet Manager works with VB, C++, C#, Java, SQL, ASP, PHP, HTML, even COBOL, Assembler and Fortran (37 languages are supported). You can also use Snippet Manager to manage plain old ASCII text data.
Snippet Manager features a powerful search tool that is geared towards developers. You can use regular expressions or simple search criteria to find the exact code you need, when you need it, based on the language, category, dependencies, keywords or the actual code that you are looking for.
Another useful feature is the ability to publish your snippets on the Internet and optionally password protect your code. All you need is an FTP server to host snippets for your company or for anonymous users over the Internet (your choice).
Best of all, Snippet Manager is secure. The software does not "phone home" for any reason. You are virtually guaranteed that the software will never quit working or that your source code will ever be distributed without your permission.
No setup required. Simply download the ZIP file and unzip the files into the directory of your choice.
To launch the application, double click SnippetManager.exe (Microsoft .NET 3.5 framework is required).
You can upload snippets or download snippets from HTTP servers by adding the URLs in the HTTP server area on the settings dialog. Add your username and password if your HTTP server is protected, otherwise leave these fields blank. If you select the "Subscribe" check box, Snippet Manager will check the HTTP server for new snippet updates each time the application starts up.
A purple icon will display next to a web folder whenever updates are available.
Editor's review for Snippet Manager
Snippet Manager is a lightweight, open source code management freeware application that is geared towards developers, and is compatible with a plethora of programming languages. The software was designed to simplify the process of assembling and managing code in 37 languages, amongst which are C++, C#, VB, Java, ASP, SQL, PHP, and HTML, and even ASCII data. Snippet Manager not require setup, is easy to use, and consumes a minuscule amount of disk space. The following information adequately outlines some of the main features and functionality of the Snippet Manager.
Many of the main features in Snippet Manager make it evident that it was designed for webmasters and developers. For example, users can enjoy the incredibly useful search engine that makes it possible to find exact snippets of code quickly and easily based on a variety of criteria, including the programming language, keywords, dependencies, and category. Snippet Manager is also capable of being integrated into Visual Studio as part of the 'Tools' menu within Visual Studio. Its also possible to publish source code online to any FTP server within Snippet Manager, making it an ideal solution for developers and webmasters alike.
The 'New Snippet' button, located in the toolbar, is the starting point of saving and managing a snippet of code in Snippet Manager. After clicking this button, the user can paste or type code into the Code Window, adjust a few preferences such as keywords and dependencies, name the snippet, choose (or create) a category, and save the snippet into the Snippet Manager Library. All snippets are saved as XML files to the “My Snippets” folder on the user's hard drive. Alternatively, the user can upload the snippet directly to their FTP server using the 'Upload' button. It is important to note that, before uploading a snippet to FTP using Snippet Manager, the desired web directory must already exist on the web server because Snippet Manager does not create directories. Users can also download snippets that have been uploaded to FTP using the “Download” button on the toolbar.
Snippet Manager is a completely secure open-source software that does not automatically communicate with a web server while it is operating (does not 'phone home' in techie talk). This means there is no risk of losing source code or having it distributed without the developer's permission. All passwords and usernames are completely encrypted before being stored on the user's hard drive.
Because it is next to impossible to get anything that is truly ‘free’ these days, Snippet Manager is a real treat for web masters and developers alike. Although there is no support, there is a whole community of users just like us out there who are ready, willing and able to walk us through those little problematic areas as they come up.
Not only do you get great freeware, but you become a member of a community dedicated to keeping as much of the web as free as possible. Enjoy!
