Editor's review for jZip
Since the dawn of computer networks, there have been utilities that compress one or more files into a single smaller file. These command line file archiving utilities were known by obscure names such as 'tar', 'arc', 'pkarc' and 'pkzip'. Back then, the internet was in its infancy and computers generally only connected via modem speeds up to 1200bps so sending a file from one computer to another was a time consuming activity. Thus, compression utilities were essential for saving space, and shortening upload and download times. Even today, despite computers having vastly more storage space and faster internet connection speeds, compression utilities are still tremendously useful. Thanks to their modern GUI interfaces, Drag & Drop capabilities, security features and support for multiple compression formats, they are easier than ever to use.
jZip, based on a proven and reliable 7-Zip Open Source archiving technology by Igor Pavlov, is a powerful compression utility which allows you to create, extract and manipulate industry standard archives including RAR, TAR, Zip, GZip and 7-Zip. A very useful feature of jZip is its ability to access files stored in ISO images which saves you the time and trouble of burning the ISO image to a CD or DVD and then retrieving the files required. This feature is also a great time saver if you are preparing an ISO image for distribution and want to check if you have included all the files you intended to distribute.
Going beyond the standard archive formats, jZip can also extract files from CAB, RPM, DEB and NSIS archives which are commonly used by Microsoft Windows program installers and Linux distributions.
Sporting an elegant, easy to use user interface, jZip is a free alternative to the commercial WinZip utility.
The jZip interface will be familiar and intuitive to users of other archiving programs. It consists of the standard two panel layout with folder trees on the Explorer style left panel, and subfolders and files in the right panel.
The right panel supports creation of folders and subfolders within the archive and the ability to Drag & Drop files into them. Locating files in the archive is a breeze, courtesy of the ability to switch views between icon, thumbnail, list and detail view. This is a real time saver if your archive contains many files such as images, being able to see thumbnails allows you to select the exact images you want to extract.
If using thumbnails doesn't help, jZip supports file sorting by clicking on column headers in detail view and wildcard selection, e.g. select all .jpg files within an archive. In true Windows utility style, it is not necessary to run jZip manually to create or open an archive. On installation, jZip will add its own context menu to Windows Explorer so you can just right click and select the activity you wish to perform. jZip is completely free for home and enterprise users which means that you can use it as a standard tool both at home and in the office.
